About David Tangvald: David Tangvald may be REALTORS® Federal Credit Union, A Division of Northwest Federal Credit Union’s number one fan. Tangvald is young in the world of real estate, but has been able to accomplish a lot since he began just 26 years ago. Tangvald is president of the Portland Metropolitan Association of REALTORS®, a national director, four time chairman of “Street of Dreams”, and has owned his own real estate firm for 4 ˝ years. You can learn more about Tangvald by going to www.tangvaldinc.com.

On his way to work at 7:00am Tangvald gave us a call to tell us how much he loves the credit union:

The Credit Union: How did you learn about the REALTORS® Federal Credit Union, A Division of Northwest Federal Credit Union?

Tangvald: By being active with the National Association of REALTORS®. I reached outside my local association and am involved on a national level.

The Credit Union: Why did you join the REALTORS® Federal Credit Union, A Division of Northwest Federal Credit Union?

Tangvald: I met Tom Glatt and got all wound up in it. It’s been a hard year for REALTORS® so it was cool for an NAR executive to authorize the credit union, even though times were so tough. It was an excellent opportunity for me to show other REALTORS® that NAR is doing things for its members.

The Credit Union: What products/services do you like best?

Tangvald: Although I only currently have a savings account, I think the car loans are great. I talk about them all the time. Cars are so important to REALTORS®, so it’s important to have that accessible. I was also a fan of the Freedom Loan.

The Credit Union: What do you look for in a financial services provider?

Tangvald: I pretty much like ease of access. The online banking thing was a new experience for me. I didn’t really get it until I got involved. What I like about it is it doesn’t matter where I am in the country – I always have access. The system really works for me.

The Credit Union: How is your relationship with REALTORS® Federal Credit Union, A Division of Northwest Federal Credit Union different from your relationship with other financial institutions?

Tangvald: I feel ownership in the credit union. With my bank I feel like I’m dodging fees. But the credit union - it’s mine, it’s ours.

The Credit Union: How can real estate professionals benefit from REALTORS® Federal Credit Union, A Division of Northwest Federal Credit Union membership?

Tangvald: As we crawl out of this economy it’s important to have a financial institution that understands REALTORS®. It’s more like a family than a financial institution – it’s personal.

The Credit Union: What is most rewarding about being in real estate?

Tangvald: This is my 26th year in real estate. I’m president of the 31st largest local in the nation (Portland) and I’m also a national director – so I have my feet in two canoes. It’s different every day. One day it’s mold in an attic, the next day it’s a lot line adjustment. There are different puzzles every day.

The Credit Union: What are your greatest accomplishments?

Tangvald: I’m a young person, and become a national director has been one of my greatest accomplishments. We also have a program called “Street of Dreams” that got started in Portland in the 80’s and I’m the only 4 time chairman in that. I’ve owned my own real estate firm for 4 ˝ years and I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t had all of those ownership responsibilities.

The Credit Union: What obstacles have you overcome to reach your current level of success?

Tangvald: Being broke! Being able to survive on a commission income is tough. I’m married to a REALTOR® so this isn’t something I can just flip off, go home at 4:00 and watch Brian Williams. This is a lifestyle I live. Living on commission is a reality – the credit union understands that we’re paid on commission. No one understands this as well as REALTORS® Federal Credit Union, A Division of Northwest Federal Credit Union.

The Credit Union: Do you have any words of advice for other real estate professionals?

Tangvald: Basically my advice right now is that every single transaction counts. You have to get out of bed, every single day, and practice real estate. As difficult as it is with the changes in lending and the economic scenery we are all challenged every day to put a transaction together. The only way we can get out of this mess is one transaction at a time. As REALTORS® we need to take some responsibility.

The Credit Union: What would you say to someone who is reluctant to use a virtual credit union?

Tangvald: Trust takes time. You need to get comfortable with your own uncomfortability. If that makes you uncomfortable – it’s just more of a reason to do it. I was uncomfortable at first – I didn’t get it, but now I do. So just take a risk, it’s only $100, and make the move. It’s totally worth sitting down at the computer for 15 minutes and getting yourself set up. You won’t know if it’s for you or not unless you’re a member.

The Credit Union: In your opinion, what can we do better?

Tangvald: Not run out of lemon drops! And finding more people like me who will talk up the credit union.
